5 ways to stay hydrated during a heat wave

During a heat wave, it is even more important than usual to hydrate your body. When the weather heats up, we sweat more than we normally would and, therefore, experience a greater water loss. It is then essential to compensate this water loss. Here are five tricks to make it through.


1) Drink water

The best beverage to cool off when it is hot outside is water. It is absolutely necessary for your body to function properly. If you find the taste of water bland, note that flavoured water, like Naya Zest, count as well!


2)  Eat fruits and vegetables

Drinking it not the only way to stay hydrated. Eating is another way to hydrate your body! When the temperature rises, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. These are rich in water and vitamins and allow you to stay hydrated in a delicious way! Short for ideas? Watermelon, cucumber, strawberries, celery : these foods are all super rich in water!


3) Make sure to drink enough so you do not feel thirsty

Make sure to drink constantly throughout the day. You should not feel thirst. When you begin to feel thirsty, it means you are dehydrated and that you should drink more. Keep a water bottle with you wherever you go to ensure you drink enough during the day!


4) Increase your water intake if you exercise

Exercise goes hand in hand with sweat and it is even more true during a heatwave. Before, during and after physical activities, make sure you drink a lot of water to counteract the major water loss caused by exercising


5) Avoid sugary drinks and alcoholic beverages

Very sweet drinks and alcoholic beverages are very popular in summertime but should be avoided during a heat wave. These refreshments usually leave you feeling even more thirsty and that is not a good thing when you are trying to make sure to stay hydrated. There is one exception : lemonade. Rich in vitamin C, its acidity stimulate saliva production and makes it a great thirst-quenching drink! Make sure you choose homemade lemonade so you can control the amount of sugar.
